Avoid long, hot baths.
As comfortable as hot baths and showers are during winter, hot water can actually strip the skin of moisture. Avoid soaking for too long in the tub and use warm or tepid water only. Use mild soaps or moisturizing bath gels to soothe skin and prevent dryness.
Keep skin moisturized.
Keeping skin moist is a must during winter, even for people with oily skin. Apply a moisturizing lotion after a bath and before going out. Lotions contain humectants that act as a barrier on the surface of the skin to prevent moisture loss. They also absorb water that may be present in the air, hence keeping skin soft.
For the face, consider a face cream that is especially formulated for your skin type. People with dry skin need extra moisturizers during cold months and people with oily skin should not skimp on the skin protection either. For people who suffer from certain skin conditions such as acne or eczema, it is a good idea to seek the advice of a dermatologist for proper care to avoid break outs.
Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean that you should skip the sunscreen. Exposure to the sun’s rays anytime of year can lead to premature aging, wrinkling and dryness. Moisturize the lips.
Although lipsticks contain oils that moisturize the lips, not all lipsticks provide enough protection during winter. Use moisturizing lipsticks or tinted lip balms instead. You could also apply a favorite lipstick over a protective layer of moisturizing balm or ointment.
Drink enough water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Water keeps the skin supple and helps prevent dryness. It also helps flush out toxins that may make the skin appear rough and irritated.
