When Z.E.N. comes home from school, he usually eats a light meal. After his meal, he always expects to get a snack. I usually give him some fruit like apples, grapes or pears, but sometimes he wants something a little different.
If you recall, last month I talked about the New Duane Reader magazine from Duane Reade. (You can access the online version of the Duane Reader here)
I remembered seeing some snack ideas in there so I hunted down my issue of the Duane Reader to take a closer look. These are some of the new snack ideas I found.
These snacks looked pretty good, so Philip and I decided to make a trip to Duane Reade.
We discovered that Duane Reade is a great place to shop for snacks because they have such a huge selection! I am not exaggerating! Just take a look at the pictures!
We picked up a few snacks and continued to browse around the store. While browsing I saw something out of the corner of my eye that I just had to stop to take a closer look.
Yep, that’s a copy of the new, steamy, erotic novel 50 Shades of Grey by E. L. James. Didn’t think I’d find that book at Duane Reade. It just goes to show you that you can find just about anything you need (or want) at Duane Reade!
So, moving on, here are the snacks that we purchased.
Delish Blueberry Nut Blend – This is a great premium trail mix that contains almonds, blueberries, walnuts & pecans. It’s a good heart healthy snack that has zero cholesterol, 3g of fiber and 4g of protein.
Setton Dry Roasted Pistachios with Sea Salt – This is another good heart healthy snack with zero cholesterol, 3g of fiber and 7g of protein.
As you can tell we eat a lot of nuts in our house. Philip suffers from high cholesterol so it’s important for him to eat heat healthy foods.
Belvita Breakfast – I know this is touted as a breakfast food, but for some reason, I think of it more as a snack than a breakfast, because, come on, they’re biscuits a.k.a. cookies! I haven’t tried this yet so maybe I’ll change my mind when I do, but for now, I’m calling it a snack! This too is pretty heart healthy with zero cholesterol, 3g of fiber, and 4g of protein.
Nice Cheddar Penguins – These are similar to goldfish, but instead of being shaped like goldfish, they’re shaped like penguins. Z.E.N. loves these. Although they are are made with real cheddar cheese, they are not the lightest snack that he could have. The sugar count is only 1g, but it does have a lot of sodium (220mg) Regardless, I still thinks it’s a pretty good snack and I don’t usually give him the whole serving size of 52 crackers. I usually give him about half of that. (Yes I count them!) As I’ve said before, my philosophy is that everything is ok, in moderation.
Nice Double Butter Popcorn – We like to watch movies as a family on the weekends, and Z.E.N. always asks for popcorn. This is a treat for him. I usually buy plain popcorn but he always wants me to buy the buttery ones. Every now and then I do!
Delish Five Star Fudge – All I can say about this one is YUM! I wouldn’t expect to find high quality fudge at a drugstore, but this fudge is soft, creamy and absolutely delicious.

Those cheddar penguins would be such a win in my house. We’ve been eating a lot of carrots and celery with different dips lately.

Z.E.N. Celery with dip is a great idea.

I think that store looks amazing! I wish we had one here in Ohio. The only new snack food we’ve tried around here are the honey wheat pretzels from Aldi. We all love them! lol

I love pretzels but have not tried the honey wheat variety. That’s one I’ll have to try!

I have to be sooooo careful with my snacks and food because of my allergies. I have to read every label not only for the obvious, but the hidden (guar gum, made from corn) — that I usually stick with nuts and vegetables (altho that might include a dip in some dressing).

I need to get more creative with snacks. Veggies/nuts dipped in dressing sounds really good.

We don’t have Duane Reade in Ohio, but I have visited when I’ve been in NYC. I try to be creative with snacks too. I make up a nut and fruit mix, or let my kids pump a cream cheese mix into strawberry’s. I also let them mix up jello with a fruit they like, although that doesn’t usually get all eaten! The fun is more in the making of that. Lately, we have been making smoothies with fruit and spinach + cilantro! Yeah – they like them. Go figure!
All great ideas. I wonder if Z.E.N would like that spinach smoothie. Will have to try it!

My kids are stuck on only certain fruits such as bananas, apples and orange. They may also eat cheese crackers for snack, but I can’t get them to eat raw veggies.
