There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Fly Guy by Tedd Arnold cover

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Fly Guy is one of the books in Tedd Arnold’s Fly Guy series. It is also one of Z.E.N.’s favorite Fly Guy book.  The story starts with Buzz and his pet fly, Fly Guy, who have gone to visit Buzz’s Grandma. While Buzz is in the process of introducing his pet to Grandma, Fly Guy accidentally gets knocked down Grandma’s throat and into her stomach. The real fun starts to happen when Grandma starts swallowing different animals to take care of Fly Guy, such as a cat, a dog, a goat, and even a horse! As it starts to get cramped in Grandma’s stomach, Fly Guy’s journey is to find the way out and back to his master, Buzz.

Unique Twist to a Classic

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Fly Guy is a unique and refreshing twist to the classic tale of the old lady who swallowed a fly. The great thing about taking a spin on a story so well known is that is sure to be a great hit with kids. The story that they all loved is taken anew, though the familiarity of the characters is still there. Also, the story is so cleverly written that it is sure to have the kids rolling on the floor with laughter. In fact, Z.E.N. always cracks up when I read it to him.  This also makes for a great afternoon story for your kids, or something that teachers can read to the class during storytelling hour.

Expressive and Entertaining Illustrations

Tedd Arnold has done a fantastic job of providing illustrations that make the book complete. The fun and expressive characters that Tedd provides in his book make the story come to life and allow children to explore their imaginations further as they go about reading the story. The crazy bug eyed characters that the children see in the book, add to the hilarity of the story.  I myself chuckled a couple of times when I read the story!

I love books that take a new look at classics like this. Right now we’re working through Disney versions of old fairly tales (Daisylocks and the Three Bears tonight).
