Hot dog season generally runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but did you know that July is National Hot Dog Month? I, for one, wasn’t aware of this and just found out.
When we were growing up, my sisters and I used to love going to Coney Island. We loved going on the rides in the amusement park, but the highlight of going to Coney Island was always going to the original Nathan’s restaurant for hot dogs.
I must admit, I ate a lot of hot dogs growing up. They are of course an iconic New York City food. Plus, they’re sold just about everywhere – from sketchy food carts on the streets of Manhattan to fancy restaurants.
New Yorkers are not the only ones eating them though. Statistics show that:
* Americans will eat a minimum of 7 billion hot dogs during this summer, according to predictions from the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council.
* Ten percent of the annual yearly hot dog sales take place in the month of July, which is the official National Hot Dog Month.
* The consumption of sausage is increasing with sales in 2011 reaching as high as $2 billion dollars.
Nowadays, I don’t eat hot dogs as often as I used to, but when I do, I like to top mine with ketchup, mustard, chopped onions and relish. Z.E.N likes his with Ketchup and Mustard, while Philip likes his spicy.
If you are bold enough to add spice to your dog, Hormel has many products to accommodate you, including their too hot to handle Hormel® hot chili with beans.
Do you and your family eat hot dogs?

I just had a hot dog for lunch! And yesterday for lunch… and the day before for dinner! LOL Wow. That’s a lot, but that’s the first time I’ve eaten hot dogs in quite awhile! Did you know, pregnant women should not consume raw hot dogs? For real. I learned that at my appt last week!

Oh man! I love hot dogs! I usually like ketchup, mustard & relish. My husband likes chili, cheese & onions on his. My oldest son likes LOTS of relish & ketchup on his. Our youngest son will eat his with ketchup & a little mustard. Our daughter won’t touch one with a 10 foot pole

Ha, ha, so funny that your daughter won’t eat them, while everyone else in the family does.
I miss hot dogs. I wonder if I can fit one in on my strict diet and cheat again! That picture of one up there sure does look good.

We are a low sodium family so unless they make a low sodium hot dogs, they aren’t allowed in our house. I did see a cute lunch idea on interest though involving spaghetti and sliced hot dogs. I was almost tempted to try it out.
