Here on Philzendia, I frequently review children’s books which I have read. However, whichever books you choose to read, it is always important to read to children regularly – and here’s why.
One of the best reasons for reading to your children is that it will help them to develop their vocabulary. When they are old enough you can also encourage them to read to you, but even before then you will find that by readying to them they will be able to develop a good understand of how the English language works. Even though it might be years until they are writing themselves, reading to children when they are young will also give them a basic knowledge of how sentences are constructed.
As a parent, reading to your children is also a great way to spend time together and strengthen your relationship. If you like to spend your evenings watching TV or playing games of partypoker, then try to save these activities for after your children have gone to bed. Although school age children may be read to during their day, they are unlikely to be given the close attention that you are able to offer them at home. Reading to your children can easily become a part of their bedtime routine, and offers a regular opportunity for you to spend good quality time together.
Lastly, reading to children can also be a great way to help them develop their own imagination and sense of creativity. Unlike watching children’s television shows, books encourage children to picture characters and places for themselves, and help them to imagine things which they may not necessarily be able to see.

I couldn’t agree more. When I had just 2 boys and was working part-time,I had the boys in a home child care situation. My toddler’s favorite thing in the whole, wide world was reading. I shared that with the mom who was going to watch him. Her response was that she never read to her own kids. That was one thing that helped me make the decision to live leaner and be home for my boys. All of my boys love to read now.

Reading is important for the children in order to develop their vocabulary. This is also a great time for parents to spend time with their children in order to build good bonding. Its a good opportunity rather.

Thanks for this insightful post. I have to agree with you on the vocabulary part. However, I always test my nephews with a mini-test after every reading session to see what they’ve learned; this also helps them in retaining the vocabulary for use later on; something your readers might want to try out.

I also wanted to add that having sessions where you actually let kids listen to audiobook versions of chosen books is a great way of helping your kids build up their short term memory, helping them memorize details and reinforcing neural connections at a young age.
