Last week I attended a media tour of the newest Duane Reade Store located at 100 Broadway in NYC. Originally, there was a Borders bookstore at this location, but it is now home to a 22,000-square-foot Duane Reade store.
The two-level store features most of the items you would find at a drugstore, but in addition, you will find a café, a self-serve frozen yogurt bar, a gourmet salad bar, and an in-store museum quality exhibit.
The tour, which was led by two Duane Reade Executives, began on the upper level.
First, we took a look at the Canyon of Heroes exhibit which pays homage to some of the historic events which occurred in downtown Manhattan.
Next, we got to explore the mini-LOOK boutique. I was fascinated by the Women’s fragrance display because to test out a fragrance, all you had to do was place your wrist under the nozzle and a puff of fragrance was dispensed. Genius!
Next we visited the Pharmacy area. Duane Reade has an innovative new approach to pharmacies. Traditionally, pharmacists are behind the counter and not very accessible. At this Duane Reade location, the pharmacists are out front where they can easily engage with their clients.
After that, we headed downstairs to the ground level. The ground level is pretty much devoted to food -lots of food!
We visited the Up Market Fro-Yo Bar. I loved the peach flavored frozen yogurt. It was so good!
We browsed the offerings at the Up Market Chop salad bar. I was happy to hear that some of the produce used is locally sourced.
And, we checked out the Up Market Café. The pastries looked yummy!
Duane Reade has always focused on convenience, but housing all of these options under one roof brings the concept of convenience to a whole other level!

Holy moly! It looks like a store you would find in a mall (like JCP or something similar!) How cool! And I have to say – totally jealous of the Fro Yo station!

I was actually going to say that it looked more like a department store in the post, but changed my mind. Glad you said it for me!
