Book Review – I Can Save the Earth

I can save the earth I Can Save The Earth: One Little Monster Learns to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle was written by Alison Inches and illustrated by Viviana Garafoli. This book is part of the “Little Green Books” series, which is a new eco-friendly series from Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing Division.

This book is about a little monster named Max. Max is a naughty little monster. He litters, wastes water, uses too much toilet paper, and wastes electricity. However, one night there is a blackout. When this happens, Max ventures outdoors and notices things he never noticed before. He noticed how pretty the moon looked, he heard insects chirping, and he saw a star shoot across the sky. He was amazed by how beautiful everything looked. From that day on, Max began to change his ways. He realized that the earth is a wonderful and beautiful place and he learns to reduce, reuse and recycle in a n effort to help save the earth.

This book, which is book is printed on 100% recycled paper and 100% vegetable based inks, helps to encourage kids to help save the earth just like Max. He stops doing all the bad things he was doing before and now cleans up after himself, picks up litter, composts leaves, doesn’t waste water or electricity. He even starts to eat healthier and plays outside more. He’s changed so much that instead of being called a little monster, Max is now called a little “green” monster.

The story is very easy to read and follow. A glossary of terms is included at the end to help explain some of the new words found within the book. The illustrations are bright and colorful.

Z.E.N didn’t seem to really enjoy this book, but I can definitely say that he understands the concept of reduce, reuse, recycle because ever since we read the story, he has been reminding me to turn off the lights when we leave a room.

I would highly recommend this book to younger children who are ready to learn how to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
